Andre Derain was a close friend of the goldsmith François Hugo, and together in the South of France they enjoyed undertaking experiments to make ceramics among other things. Shortly before he died Derain created a few sculptural jewels in lead which he gave to Hugo to make up in almost pure 22ct gold, each in addition of 6. Each one from the edition, however, is slightly different, as they were hand hammered in a steel die.
